Mer de Glace

The sea of ice is the largest glacier of the French alps. It has 7km in length, 1200 meters wide... and 200 meters deep !

A more classical way to get there is to take the Montenvers's train from Chamonix.

Of all the glorious powder photos that you've ever seen you can bet that most of them were taken in this valley. The most famous cable-car in the world with its two spans takes you from 1035m in Chamonix to 3842m.

From here, you can continue your trip in the high mountains by taking the gondola to "Pointe Helbronner", in the heart of the "La Vallée Blanche", over a world of crevasses and seracs, 5km of "flight" over the ice basin of the "Géant".

During winter, "La Vallee Blanche" is a 20km run down a glacier amongst Les Aiguilles du Chamonix.
Warning: this high mountain trail (crevasses etc.) is unmarked and without ski patrol. It should be undertaken by good skiers and snowboarders only. The presence of a mountain guide is highly recommended.
